The initiative Open Data The Fuerteventura Island Council's policy is based on open data regulations at the community, state and regional levels, which establish the rights and duties of reuse by companies, citizens and public administrations.

The legal framework for Open Data is defined by the following documents:

European regulations

• Directive (EU) 2019/1024 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 on open data and the re-use of public sector information.
• Commission Communication. Guidelines on recommended standardized licenses, datasets and charging for the reuse of documents (2014/C240/01).
• Directive 2013/37/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 June 2013 amending Directive 2003/98/EC on the re-use of public sector information.
• Directive 2003/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 November 2003 on the re-use of public sector information.

• Royal Decree-Law 24/2021, of November 2, on the transposition of European Union directives on matters of guaranteed bonds, cross-border distribution of collective investment undertakings, open data and reuse of public sector information, exercise of copyright and related rights applicable to certain online transmissions and retransmissions of radio and television programs, temporary exemptions for certain imports and supplies, for consumers and for the promotion of clean and energy-efficient road transport vehicles.
